Canadian Cottage Revolutionized by Fernie Developer

The Cottages at Montane are small, efficient & offer an affordable solution for homebuyers seeking a mountain lifestyle

FERNIE, B.C. Parastone Developments announced today the launch of a new, innovative, contemporary cottage design that maximises mountain views and offers residents minimal maintenance. Integrated into the first stage of homesites within Montane’s first neighbourhood, The Terraces, The Cottages at Montane feature ample storage space. Homebuyers now have a new option to purchase a cottage in the closest new community to Fernie’s Historic Downtown.

“Our research shows a product like this is not common but it’s what homebuyers are demanding,” says Simon Howse, general manager of Parastone and investor in Montane. “The traditional Canadian cottage can be a lot of work to maintain. The Cottages at Montane will reside on a fully serviced, strata managed lot, promising residents minimal upkeep and maintenance. This gives outdoor enthusiasts more time to enjoy our four-season playground.”

Located on a generous parcel of land, The Cottages at Montane include four homes that stretch into the backyard wilderness of Castle Mountain and the Morrissey Range. Appealing to singles, couples, small families and the weekend warrior, The Cottages at Montane are small, yet efficient. Residents will enjoy entry space, generous storage and single car garages to allow for space for four seasons of outdoor gear. Featuring elevated living spaces, each cottage is purposely positioned to optimize views of the dramatic mountain scenery.

Phillip Jones, broker/owner at Royal LePage East Kootenay, says in the 2015 Recreational Property report released by LePage that demand for recreational property in the East Kootenay region has been busy since last fall. It is expected to remain strong for the rest of the year, as buyers are attracted to the natural beauty and milder weather of the area compared to other parts of Canada. Howse anticipates the cottages to be popular amongst weekend vacationers that visit Fernie for its outdoor activities. “The East Kootenays boast the most sunshine hours in BC, which makes Fernie a fantastic second home destination. The winter days seem longer and summer days warmer.”

Homebuyers will have two floor plans to choose from that have been strategically designed to complement natural surroundings. All homes feature two bedrooms and two bathrooms on the upper floor. Thoughtfully planned for Main Floor Living, two homes measuring 1,245 sq. ft. feature convenient entry from the garage to the entryway, leading directly into an open kitchen, dining and living area. The innovative floor plan features a two-storey living room with floor to ceiling windows that allow for ample light for residents to enjoy spectacular mountain views.

Buyers can opt for Upper Floor Living with two 1,105 sq. ft. floor plans. This floor plan features a garage and covered carport to allow for ample storage of outdoor gear and was deliberately planned to keep the outdoors out. Residents will enjoy an open concept Upper Floor Living area that extends into the outdoors with a spacious 12’ by 12’ deck.

Parastone is now accepting reservations for The Cottages at Montane. Interested parties can register their interest at www.montainfernie.ca. Construction on the first cottage will begin this summer and move-in is anticipated for spring/summer 2016.

The Cottages at Montane were designed by Calgary architect, Catherine Chernoff. “We’ve taken a ‘”mountain modern” design approach to create comfortable and inviting homes,” says Catherine Chernoff, principal architect of The Cottages at Montane interior design team. “Our interior design team is finalizing a limited selection of interior palettes to choose from to beautifully finish each home.” Employing a gentle sensitivity to the landscape and choice of materials in all her projects, Chernoff is best known in Fernie for her design of The Brickhouse Bar & Grill.

Reservations are now being accepted for Phase Three, the final phase in Montane’s first neighbourhood, The Terraces. Interested parties have 17 homesites to choose from starting at $169,000. Sales open August 9. The Terraces neighbourhood consists of a total of 45 homes and will complete the first phase of the multi-stage 660-acre community. At full build out, the value of all homes will be more than $200 million.

Montane, Fernie is the vision of Parastone Developments. Parastone has a proven track record with development in Fernie, having completed 901 Fernie, a $30 million restoration of a 1908 Fernie schoolhouse transformed into an iconic building with condominium residences, vacation rentals, and spa and wellness centre.
